When I was out at Mayo several times this past year, I appreciated some of the artwork scattered throughout their Scottsdale campus. All of it was made by doctors, nurses, staff, or others with a tie to the Mayo facilities, which I thought was very special.
The very first thing I saw when walking into the building, my very first day there, just made me smile.
Hope.
I’ve already blogged a bit about the significance that word has had in my life. It was particularly neat that it was the very first thing to capture my attention as we walked into Mayo. Just as much, though, it incorporates my love of other languages and cultures – and, ironically, just a few months prior I had made a similar piece for my dad’s office with his favorite word, grace!
There were some extremely detailed textile art pieces that the textile artist in me also appreciated. This was a three-part piece made to celebrate Mayo’s 20th anniversary of their Scottsdale campus facilities and it’s remained up on display since.
The Scottsdale Mayo Hospital Building
The Scottsdale Mayo Clinic Shea Campus
Scottsdale Mayo scenery and symbols (the Scrabble pieces just made me smile!)
There were some interesting mixed media pieces, as well.
It’s probably really evident I’m a textile artist – I mostly photographed the textile pieces. Though you’d think given how much time I spent there I’d have made a little more effort to get some of the others!

Those are all gorgeous. We have a local facility which also has a lot of beautiful, uplifting art throughout. That seems like a great addition to the healing process.

It totally does, to me, too!
In the Mayo hospital building, it was so lovely, everything looked over the inner courtyard sort of area – lots of live trees, constant live music, lots of windows with natural light…it was great.
And perhaps what made me smile the most (this is probably horrible that I got such a giggle out of it – and will lend insight into me!) was that I was there in the hospital on the 25th anniversary. They did a party…which I thought was cool (for anyone there, not just staff) and what did they have? Cupcakes!
I loved it! I totally thought they’d have something healthy or whatever and LOVED that they had a cupcake bar 🙂 There may have been more…but cupcakes were what someone brought up to me. Chocolate, since, really, isn’t that the only kind worth eating? 😉 I think that helps the healing process, too!

The Healing Power of Art is amazing. Afterall, those who have created it are guided and inspired by a greater power than themselves. The pieces that you’ve chosen here are so beautiful. I too am always drawn to textile art. I was amazed at the art throughout MD Anderson when there with my brother.
Thanks so much for stopping by my ‘Letter M’ post. I love hearing from you and visiting your blog. You are inspiring!

Thanks for your kind words, Sue!
How neat that MD Anderson also has great art displayed also! Was that at the TX one? When I was out at Mayo I learned there’s now one in AZ, as well. I know a number of people who have done treatment at MDA and heard great things about them as well!
Have you seen Nita’s blog for the A-Z Challenge? http://devotedtoquilting.wordpress.com/tag/devoted-to-quilting/ She’s also doing a quilt related A-Z. I’m so enjoying both of your blogs! I’m finally going to post a couple pictures of a few of my pieces for “T” 🙂 “Q” got taken by something else.
I’ve found so many blogs I’m so grateful to have come across because of this A-Z Challenge, it’s been great…and so cool to see so many of you finding ways to even do it themed!

Wow these pieces are beautiful. And not at all what I was expecting when I read the title Mayo art. I was going with Best Foods. 😉

Oh my gosh, Barb! I almost spit out my drink at that comment! You are such a goof!
(Oh, and “the spy” has been up to mischief…she’s so taken with my water mixed with a bit of Sobe water or Gatorade, that she’s not only just trying to drink it when I get up if I don’t have a lid on, now she’s started knocking over my cups with lids and managing to get them off to drink it. About 5 am I heard her and realized she was going after my cup – only water – and saw what she had done! What a stinker! And then I set my egg salad sandwich down this afternoon after my appointment and went to get medicine, and came back, and she had taken the bread off the top and sat there and was eating the egg salad out of the middle! What nerve!)

These are beautiful. I love when art and music are incorporated into healing. It’s such a cool way to use people’s gifts.

How inspirational to walk in and see the “Hope” piece 1st thing! Really like the Scrabble pieces with the scientific words spelled out ( :
Leese said:
I saw “hope” first and just had to smile – and then take a picture and text a small group of close friends as they had prayed me off and used that word so much.
The scrabble thing cracked me up! I’m sure if I had spent longer looking at those pieces there were more fun things hiding in there – but that was too fun to not photograph 🙂
